School Supplies

The end of summer is a prime “back to school” time when we think about school supplies for our students. The Lake Whitney Ministerial Alliance and Salvation Army are here to help.

Did you know that Whitney ISD has a 61.8% Economically Disadvantaged rate (TEA designation)?  More than 60 kids at every grade level cannot afford to buy all of their school supplies.

Buying School Supplies

There are two school supply assistance programs for the 2019-2020 school year - the annual Lake Whitney Ministerial Alliance "Stuff the Teachers' Closets" and Salvation Army "Stuff the Bus".

LWMA continues its annual "Stuff the Teachers' Closets" program for the Whitney Community. Through your donations, LWMA is able to purchase supplies for the teachers who discreetly distribute to those who cannot afford them.  Those supplies are delivered to the schools at the end of July before school starts.

The Salvation Army Service Unit, in collaboration with Wal-Mart nationwide, invited each community to help them "Stuff The Bus" with school supplies for local children.  This event was held for Hill County on August 3, 2019. Those supplies were also delivered to area schools before the beginning of the school year.

Both organizations ask parents to buy as much as they can afford for their children.  What they can’t afford to buy will be supplied at their school.

Lake Whitney Ministerial Alliance provided classroom school and cleaning supplies to the Whitney ISD schools the second time around this winter. The schools are most thankful and send appreciation to all of the community for their continued support.

The Whitney Middle School was in need of sweatpants for students.  Working together with the King Memorial United Methodist Church Thrift Store, the school and the community joined hands in providing just what was asked for. Paul Booth and Allyson Cliett accepted the sweatpants and other supplies which were ordered from Amazon.

The hard-to-obtain disinfectant wipes were found in stock at Dollar General. Rayna Whitney, secretary and Jean Thompson, nurse as well as substitute and retired principal, Melaney O'Neil, graciously accept canisters to be distributed to each classroom.

Whitney Elementary School accepted some surplus supplies that had been ordered in the fall and not distributed. Sipper Bonner, secretary accepted the supplies during her last full week before retirement. We will miss Sipper and wish her the best.
